Buster Leavell Award
In 1986, Gale Fields was instrumental in the formation of the Garland Sports Hall of Fame as a non-profit organization. Hayden “Buster” Leavell served as founding Chairman (later denoted as President) during the early formative years.
Hayden Buster Leavell
In honor of his devoted service to the Garland Sports Hall of Fame and its goals, the Buster Leavell Award was created in 1991. The award was first presented to Buster Leavell, the outgoing Chairman, in appreciation for his leadership from 1986 to 1991.
In 1995, the Buster Leavell Award was presented to outgoing Chairman, Steve Finigan, for his leadership as Chairman of the Garland Sports Hall of Fame from 1991 to 1995. It was under Steve Finigan's leadership that the concept to recognize an Honor Team was formulated by the Board of Governors and later instituted at the 1992 Induction Banquet.
In 2012, outgoing President Chuck Cabaniss was presented the Buster Leavell Award in honor of his dedication and service to the Garland Sports Hall of Fame. Chuck served as President from 1995 to 2012. He held the title of President over 17 years, and also served as the GSHF historian and writer during his tenure.
