Joe Martin has been inducted into the Garland Sports Hall of Fame in recognition of his outstanding eight years as head coach of the Garland High School football team, culminated by the owls winning the Texas Class 5A, Division II, state championship in 1999. Since becoming the Garland High School football coach in 1992, Martin's teams have won the district championship five times (1994-1997 and 1999), have qualified for the state playoffs seven consecutive years (1993-1999), and advanced to the state quarterfinals in 1995. John Washington has been inducted into the Garland Sports Hall of Fame in recognition of his outstanding career as a football defensive back for South Garland High School and Tulane University and as a four-time regional champion hurdler for the Colonels. Washington currently serves as the Assistant Superintendent for Student Services and Community Relations for the Garland Independent School District. He received his Bachelor of Arts degree in Health Services from Tulane and earned a Masters degree in Education Administration from East Texas State University.
